Governor Opens Door After Four
by Sydney Cummins
Columbia (WLTX) - Governor Sanford held another of his "Open Door After Four" meetings Monday - the first since a house subcommittee voted against an impeachment resolution.
It's the opportunity he gives the public several times a year to speak with him on a one-on-one basis. But as News19 found out, most of those who came were ready to move past the last few months.
"We've got to do more than just get them elected. We have to stand by them, we also have to surround them with good counsel, keep their feet to the fire," explained Fort Mill resident Kevin Smith.
That's Smith's theory on keeping politicians in his own Republican party in check - including Governor Sanford who he came to see today. "Very concerned about what remains in the 12 months of the governor's term and I'd like to ask him what's on the agenda," he said, while waiting for his turn.
Smith was one of the few wanting to talk politics with the governor. About 20 folks were there, others wanting to see about college recommendations or to offer their work as a decoration for the state house. "I believe all the buzz and effort they've been putting into impeachment was wasted effort," said Lexington resident Shay Crawford.
Crawford was one of the only a couple people wanting to talk impeachment. But like Smith his big concern was not what happened, but what the next step is. "The job market's kinda in the tank right now, along with the economy," Crawford said, "If we don't address them now and we keep on worrying about stuff that's not causing problems, in that manner with the economy and people's well-being, then it's not gonna get any better."
And while fixing those may not come easily, it seems that for these citizens it's time for our state to try with Governor Sanford securely at the helm.
